ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE

In New South Wales during 2014, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had a higher victimisation rate than non-indigenous people for the following offences:

  • Homicide and related offences (2.7 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 1.4 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons);
  • Sexual assault (284.7 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 95.1 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons); and
  • Kidnapping/abduction (5.0 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 3.8 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons).
In contrast, non-indigenous people had a higher victimisation rate than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in New South Wales for robbery (40.7 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons, compared to 21.7 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons).

In New South Wales, a larger proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of sexual assault identified a family member as the offender than non-indigenous victims of sexual assault (44% or 276 victims compared to 32% or 2,202 victims).
